Wijnen Square Crops wins Horticulture Entrepreneur Prize 2022
Wijnen Square Crops is the overall winner of the 35th edition of the Horticulture Entrepreneur Prize. These growers from Limburg will act as ambassadors for the horticulture sector for a whole year. Managing director Pieter Wijnen was presented with the prestigious prize at the well-attended event at Floriade in Almere on 21 April.
Gearbox wins a theme prize
This year there was also a theme prize for ‘Robotisation and data-driven horticulture’, which was won by Gearbox Innovations. The company from Maasdijk is developing the smart horticulture workers of the future, of which the GearRover is the winning concept. The GearRover provides harvesting assistance during cultivation and insight into the harvest volume, and thereby combines robotics and vision with artificial intelligence in order to simplify, improve or speed up the daily work. With this theme prize, the horticulture industry is showing that the sector is making big advances in the automation and digitisation of processes for the cultivation and harvesting of healthy and safe products.

More than 65% of the energy consumed at Wijnen Square Crops’ two sites is fossil-free and sustainable. It is one of the initiatives by this vegetable grower which demonstrates innovative, market-focused and innovative entrepreneurship.

Zentoo is an engaging, ambitious and sustainable business that has given chrysanthemum cultivation a boost over the past ten years with smart marketing. Zentoo is also applying many innovations within its production in terms of LED lighting, biological crop protection and data-driven cultivation.

Winner 2022: Gearbox Innovations BV – Maasdijk
Gearbox Innovations invents, designs and produces smart products in the field of robotics and automation, self-learning software and vision solutions. The technologies assess and report in real time on the quality and growth of the plants in the greenhouse, in order to optimise the cultivation and packing process, save costs and improve product quality.
In order to optimise cultivation processes in the production of vegetables and make them more sustainable, Royal Brinkman has developed a harvest forecasting robot for tomatoes - the Plantalyzer - in collaboration with WUR, LetsGrow and Berg Hortimotive Group. The robot travels through the greenhouse autonomously and takes targeted photographs of the tomatoes.

Blue Radix develops Artificial Intelligence solutions for the full automation of daily activities and processes in greenhouse. They are thereby solving the problem of the labour shortage, and bringing about a better and more sustainable production result
PATS Indoor Drone Solutions – Delft
PATS Indoor Drone Solutions is a young business that exploits the ability to detect and eradicate harmful insects in greenhouses using drones. PATS helps growers in greenhouse horticulture to reduce crop losses, limit the use of crop protection products and automate a labour-intensive process.
